Backtitration Technique for Proton Isotherm Modeling of Oxide Surfaces

چکیده
Batch potentiometric titration analyses were made on a 7-Al,O, colloidal suspension and interpreted in terms of the electroneutrality principle. Three titration methods involving a singular reference curve were compared. The first reference used was theoretical, the latter two were representative supernatant curves: an electrolyte solution, and an aliquot of the zero point of titration (ZPT) supernatant. All three methods resulted in similar charge isotherms and a zero point of charge (ZPC) = 8.60. A fourth titration method was developed involving each supernatant of the batch titration sample to act as a unique reference. This latter method is a backtitration technique which accounts for all sources that also consume H ions, leaving the difference to be the adsorbed proton concentration only. The NaClOj electrolyte solution used is postulated to be adsorbed with competitive cation and anion exchange mechanisms with a point of zero salt effect (PZSE) = 7.50. Competitive Ion Exchange Behavior on Oxides
Cation adsorption data using MnCl2 and the proton isotherm of a Si oxide were compared with pH as the variable. The cation adsorption data quantitatively correlated with the proton isotherm analysis; the H+/Mn* exchange ratio was 6.0. The presence of adsorption plateaus are due to pH-dependent (step) reactions; this was suggested as the only reasonable explanation for adsorption isotherms cover...
متن کاملTwo-site Model for Aluminum Oxide with Mass Balanced Competitive pH+Salt/Salt Dependent Reactions
A backtitration technique was used to collect proton isotherm data for an Al oxide, and was found to be stoichiometrically related to the cation and anion isotherm behavior. The adsorption of various ions by the Al oxide surface was modeled based on: (i) two surface sites, (ii) pH+salt-dependent reactions (H and Cl~, 2OH~, or Na and OH"), (iii) competitive salt-dependent reactions (Na or Cl~), ...
متن کاملA Critical Assessment of Surface Adsorption Models
The theory on variable ionization energy of surface sites is criticized based on inconsistencies of traditional potentiometric titration data (singular reference curve methods) with electrophoretic mobility (EM) data, and on the nature of dissolution of the solid phase. The mathematical consequences of including the Boltzmann distribution term in models using intrinsic equilibrium constants are...
متن کاملNon-Dissociative Gas Adsorption with Different Chemisorption Geometries on Nanoporous Surfaces
Isotherm equation is one of the important scientific bases for adsorbent selection. There are different isotherms that do not account for an adsorbate, different chemisorption geometries on the nanoporous surface. It is interesting to introduce a general isotherm, which considers different chemisorption geometries of an adsorbate on nanoporous surfaces. In this study, an isotherm for non-dissoci...
متن کاملGeochemical Modeling of Trace Element Release from Biosolids
Biosolids-borne trace elements may be released to the environment when biosolids are used as fertilizers in farm land. Trace element leachate concentrations from biosolids are known to be limited by both organic and inorganic sorbent surfaces; this experimental evidence has not been previously verified with geochemical modeling of sorption reactions. In this study, pH-dependent leaching experim...
